Propolis is a resinous substance with a pleasant aromatic smell, which is produced by bees mainly to seal the walls of the hive. Depending on age and origin, it ranges in color from greenish yellow to dark brown.

Bees collect propolis from the flower buds of alder, birch, chestnut, poplar, fir, pine, cherry and other trees. The sticky resin is mixed with wax, balsamic and fatty substances discharged from tree buds. Propolis consists of about 55% of resin and balsams, 30% of wax, 10% of essential oils and 5% of pollen.

Propolis is an excellent antiseptic with a wide range of uses. It has a pain-relieving effect, it is used in the prevention of sore throat and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, to protect the body against infectious diseases, in gums inflammation, diseases of the upper respiratory tract, inflammation of the stomach mucous membrane and intestines and the urinary tract. Propolis ointment helps with cold sores, acne, small bumps, skin rashes and minor burns.
